Characterisation of the crack tip plastic zone in fatigue via synchrotron X‐ray diffraction

چکیده

This paper describes a new methodology for characterising the plastic zone ahead of fatigue crack. is applied to set experimental data obtained by synchrotron X-ray diffraction on bainitic steel compact tension specimen. The based generating equivalent Von Mises strain field from elastic maps. Based material response, threshold then maps identify size and shape zone. lies between plane stress Westergaard's bounds but closer theoretical prediction confirming that volume analyzed predominantly subjected conditions. However, observed has somewhat flatter shape, extending further crack less extended in growing direction.

Tensile Crack Tip Fields in Elastic-ideally Plastic Crystals

Crack tip stress and deformation fields are analyzed for tensile-loaded ideally plastic crystals. The specific cases of (0 1 O) cracks growing in the [1 0 1] direction, and (1 0 1) cracks in the [0, 1, O] direction, are considered for both fcc and bcc crystals which flow according to the critical resolved shear stress criterion. Stationary and quasistatically growing crack fields are considered...

Crack-tip Diffraction in a Transversely Isotropic Solid

A.N. Norris and J.D. Achenbach The Technological Institute Northwestern University Evanston, IL 60201 Crack diffraction in a transversely isotropic material is analyzed. The solution is given for the diffracted field generated by incidence of a plane time-harmonic wave on a semiinfinite crack located in a plane normal to the axis of symmetry of the material. The exact solution is obtained by Fo...

Fracture mechanics by three-dimensional crack-tip synchrotron X-ray microscopy

To better understand the relationship between the nucleation and growth of defects and the local stresses and phase changes that cause them, we need both imaging and stress mapping. Here, we explore how this can be achieved by bringing together synchrotron X-ray diffraction and tomographic imaging. Conventionally, these are undertaken on separate synchrotron beamlines; however, instruments capa...

On Crack Closure and Crack Tip Shielding during Fatigue Crack Growth

Fatigue crack growth can be strongly influenced by crack closure, i. e., the contacting of the opposing faces of a fatigue crack above the minimum load in a loading cycle. This crack closure shields the crack tip from the full stress field, but different views are held regarding the extent of this shielding. The type of closure, whether it be plasticity-induced, or roughness-induced may also pl...

Mechanisms of Fatigue Crack Propagation in Metals, Ceramics and Composites: Role of Crack Tip Shielding*

Crack tip shielding phenomena, whereby the "effective crack-driving force" actually experienced at the crack tip is locally reduced, are examined with reference to fatigue crack propagation behavior in metals, composites and ceramics. Sources of shielding are briefly described in terms of mechanisms relying on the production of elastically constrained zones which envelop the crack (zone shieldi...
